Charles Ormond Eames, Jr (1907–1978) and Bernice Alexandra “Ray” Eames (1912–1988) are the American designers behind the ever-famous Eames chair we all know and love. It was this talented couple who made the Lounge, and who have contributed to modern architecture and furniture today in a big way.

The famous Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman were designed for the Herman Miller furniture company, released in 1956. Inspired by the traditional English Club Chair, and made of molded plywood and leather, the Eames Lounge was a winner. It was, however, “comfortable and un-designy” according to Ray, and was the first chair they designed for a high-end market – Charles and Ray were usually about making affordable, mass-produced furniture. Un-designy as it was to them, the Eames Lounge has become iconic with Modern style design.

My all time favorite chair! definitely not the prettiest seating option out there, but it has this eccentric stunning beauty that is made it one of the most famous chair designs of the century and an ultimate choice by interior designers worldwide for over 5 decades now…. I guess that and not to forget its renowned extra comfort of course! .. The Eames chair is truly a never-will-go-out-of-style chair that perfectly blends in with any design from old fashioned traditional to the most visionary modern. I think it was the best part of Frasier s apartment, do not you agree?

Given the fuss that was made ahead of the launch – and the number of journalists present at the press preview – we really did expect the opening of the VitraHaus to create a bit more, well … interest.
And even today, 23.02.2010, when the official Vitra VitraHaus microsite should be launched…. it is still only a redirect to the Vitra Campus page.

Like Dr Who is Tardis, once inside the VitraHaus the apparently relatively small building morphs into an endless stream of corridors, staircases and passages.
We loved it.
And we really liked that Vitra allow VitraHaus visitors to test, try out and use the exhibits.
